The heart of the Grenadines

Union Island

With its unique scenery, Union Island has become a kitesurfing paradise. In the middle of the Grenadines and only 15 minutes from every other island and kite spot, it has an airport with daily flights from Barbados and good hotels to stay in. The JT Pro Center chose Union as its primary base for its two main Grenadines spots. If you are coming to kitesurf or wing foil, reserve your stay through JT Pro Center for the smoothest organisation, so accommodation, lessons, gear and boat days are planned together before you arrive.

Getting here

Fly to Barbados or St. Vincent, then take an inter island flight to Union Island with SVG Air. The Argyle International Airport on St. Vincent also offers connections from North America. For full travel details, see our getting here guide.

To do

There is plenty to do, experience the real island life far from the usual tourist heavy destinations, eat in the various restaurants, learn to kitesurf, or head out diving and fishing with our partners. Visit Happy Island or Thomson Island for sunset drinks, and see things to do.

Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing doesn’t get any better than on Union! With its varied coastline, the island has spots for everyone, whether you like flat water or waves. The JT Pro Center is on Kite Beach in Clifton, next to the small airport.

You must be able to ride upwind to kitesurf on your own on Union Island.

The uninhabited turquoise paradise

The Tobago Cays

As the marine park of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the Tobago Cays are a memorable snorkeling area where you can swim with turtles and see tropical fish. The islands are uninhabited but only a 15 minute speedboat ride from Union Island and the JT Pro Center.

Marine park

Turtles & reef

15 min by boat

Getting here

Staying on Union Island, reach the Tobago Cays by water taxi, a JT Pro Center kite tour or a snorkeling excursion. Coming by sailing boat, you can anchor in the bay; a fee of 15 EC$ per person per day is collected by the rangers. Check Tobago Cays visitor information for park details.

To do

The Tobago Cays are a famous anchorage in the Caribbean. Jump off the boat for an amazing snorkeling experience among the lush reef and the sea turtles surrounding Baradal Island. A beach BBQ lobster stop can be amazing; ask for Romeo, one of the reliable BBQ masters of the islands.

Kitesurfing

The Tobago Cays are a beautiful Grenadines kite spot, with crystal blue water and constant wind, though the kitesurfing itself is not the best, as the water is fairly choppy. Ride the huge lagoon or the waves along the outer reef if you are a good kiter; the reef can be shallow in places. A great option is to downwind from the Cays back to Union Island.

Kitesurfing is regulated. No launching from Baradal Island, launch only from Jamesby or Petit Tabac. Do not kite between sailboats.

Shallow lagoon

15 min by boat

Getting here

Get there by taxi boat or simply join one of the organized tours with the JT Pro Center. Coming by sailing boat, you can anchor in Salt Whistle Bay, where the kite spot is located.

To do

Mayreau has a beautiful beach for relaxing and swimming in calm water. It’s a must to visit the little village on the hillside, facing the sunset, with its beautiful little church, it’s a charming village in the Grenadines.

Kitesurfing

Mayreau has one spot on the upwind part of Salt Whistle Bay, the most suitable area for beginners, as the side onshore wind offers a nice shallow lagoon to progress in. Some of the best kickers in the Grenadines are here, plus a few nice waves for surfing along the point when there is no wind.

It is no longer allowed to kite in the flat water part in front of the boats.

Nothing is quite like Mopion, a small island of sand in the middle of the sea, surrounded by protective reef, with a single umbrella providing the only shade.

Getting here

Reach it with one of our kite day tours or with your own sailboat.

To do

Mopion is a romantic little island for suntanning, snorkeling and beautiful sunsets. Have a look at the beach restaurant on PSV, the hotel right in front of Mopion, for a really nice lunch.

Kitesurfing

The spot, with its shallow reefs, can be pretty dangerous, but everyone should see this sandy island once in their life. It’s a great place to start a downwinder to Union Island.

Shallow reefs make this experts only, best enjoyed for the scenery.

Getting here

Reach Mustique by sailboat, or by daily flights and a ferry from St. Vincent and Barbados. We do not offer day tours, as the kite spots are not worth the trip on their own.

To do

A very exclusive island where you can enjoy the several beaches and activities, horseback riding, private parties, or simply a drink at the famous Basil’s Bar.

Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing on Mustique isn’t the easiest. L’Ansecoi offers nice waves and flat water for freestyle but is a little gusty on east winds; Pasture Bay gets cleaner winds but a big beach break with onshore wind. We offer kite lessons from Mustique to Union Island, a small private plane can pick you up for a day of lessons.

Not for beginners, conditions are gusty and exposed.

Getting here

If you’re not sailing your own boat, reach Bequia by ferry from St. Vincent or the Grenadines.

To do

Most people stop on Bequia with their sailboats to clear customs, visit the island and explore the local market.

Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing on Bequia is largely unknown. There may be a couple of spots on the windward side, but most launching areas are very difficult and the lagoon has a lot of coral heads.
